WHAT’S A CO-OP?
A co-op is an enterprise controlled and run by its workers for the benefit of its members and in a democratic way.
HOW DOES A CO-OP WORK?
Co-op workers–or “members”–share the profits with each other. You get an hourly wage along with a share of the company’s profits based on how
many hours you work.
The starting hourly wage at Swamp Rose is $25/hr. We can pay more than many other landscaping companies because there are no bosses taking all the profit. Swamp Rose members also meet monthly to discuss the business and make decisions together. In short, co-ops are about fairness and dignity for workers.
HOW WILL I GET PAID?
Here is an example:
From April through June, Cesar worked 20 hours every week, so Cesar earned $6,000 from his hourly wage. During that same period, Swamp Rose made enough profits to set aside $15,000 to share among all members. Cesar gets some of that money too, based on how many hours he worked. If there were eight other members and they all worked the same number of hours, Cesar would earn an extra $1,875.
$6,000 hourly wage + $1,875 profit sharing over three months
This is just an example. Profit sharing will depend on how many customers we have and what other expenses the business has.
How Can I join?
New members have to be approved by the current members. In addition, new members will be required to make an initial investment, which can be paid upfront or over time.
